Proteins that promote blood cell formation

A new study found that a protein can promote the proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells and the formation of blood cells, so this protein may be used to make medicines to restore the white blood cells and red blood cells that are reduced by radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Hematopoietic stem cells refer to stem cells in the bone marrow that have the ability to self-replicate and can divide to form white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. But hematopoietic stem cells usually divide only a small part, and most of them are almost in a "hibernation" state. After the body's blood cells are reduced due to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, hematopoietic stem cells will begin to divide, but the mechanism has not been clarified.

An associate professor at Keio University in Japan, Hideaki Nakashima, and others published a paper in the American "Blood" monthly magazine on the 27th, saying that in animal experiments, they found that the protein in the bone marrow called "TIMP3" increased after chemotherapy and radiotherapy in mice. In culture dishes, after adding "TIMP3" protein to hematopoietic stem cells collected from mouse bone marrow, hematopoietic stem cells were found to proliferate actively, and the number was equivalent to 1.5 to 2 times when they were not added, and blood cells also increased.

The researchers also found that if the mice were unable to produce the "TIMP3" protein, the reduction in blood cells would be difficult to recover. Once the "TIMP3" is excessive, the hematopoietic stem cells in the "hibernation" state wake up and start to divide.

The researchers said that during chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the blood cells in the human bone marrow will be destroyed, thereby reducing the risk of infection and anemia. If the "TIMP3" protein is used, it is expected to speed up the recovery of blood cells reduced by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In addition to preventing infection, it can also reduce the amount of blood transfusion.

Office Furniture
