Swedish scientists discover damaged DNA repair mechanism

The Karolinska Institute of Medicine in Sweden recently said that their research has discovered the repair mechanism of damaged DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), which will help cancer research.

Camilla Shogren of the Karolinska Institute of Medicine stated in the information provided to reporters on the 14th that before a cell divides, a DNA molecule will be copied into two and bound by a substance called Cohesin together. Once the two DNA molecules are separated too early, the number of chromosomes (the main carrier of DNA molecules) in the newly generated cells may be abnormal, just as many tumor cells have abnormal chromosome numbers.

Swedish researchers found that, contrary to common belief, cells use Cohesin to repair damaged DNA strands. Shogren said that this discovery involves the most basic working mechanism of cells and is undoubtedly of great significance to cancer research.
