Application
ASTM D 789-98 provides a standard method for measuring the viscosity of polyamide / nylon foundry mold powders. The larger the molecular weight of the polyamide, the longer the nylon molecular chain, and the greater the viscosity at a certain concentration in the selected solvent. For solid molded products, large molecular weights have greater strength and toughness than small molecular weights.
Therefore, if a solution of a substance at a certain concentration has a specific viscosity, then the viscosity can be used to predict other properties such as toughness in the molding material.
ASTM D 789-98 provides an official, standardized procedure fortesting polyamide
or nylon molding powders. The higher the molecular weight of thepolyamide-that
is, the longer the nylon molecules-the higher the viscosity willbe at a given
concentration in the selected solvent. The larger molecules alsocontribute more
significantly to strength and toughness in the solid molded productcompared to the
shorter molecules. Therefore, if a material at a specified concentration in solution
gives a particular viscosity, then that material will most likelygive molded products
having correlating properties such as a related level oftoughness.
