There is a widely spread story in Indian mythology. When a storm hits, the god Krishna lifts a mountain called Govardhana to protect his people. Heavy rain of 7 nights. The legend is widely spread in a variety of art forms, including a 6-foot-tall, 2,000-pound stone sculpture, built in the 6th century and now preserved at the Cleveland Museum of Art. The museum purchased the statue in 1973, but at that time the statue was broken. Until recently, 3D scan printing has restored it to its full picture.
When the museum got the statue, its arms and legs were lost, and the pieces were later found in the gardens of a Belgian sculptor. The sculptor tried to reshape the statue at the time but failed. The Cleveland Museum of Art restored most of the sculpture, including the legs and right arm. But the other 423-pound pieces can't be repaired, that is, the god's left hand holds the mountain. Considering that these fragments may not be on the statue, they donated the remaining pieces to the National Museum of Cambodia, which has a similar statue.
The Cambodian Museum glued the pieces to their statues, but experts in Phnom Penh believed that the pieces did not come from this statue. In 2014, Bernard Porte, a cultural relics repairer at the Far East Institute in France, suggested that the two museums submit rock samples for professional analysis. The results show that the crystal structure of the rock debris samples perfectly matches the statues in the Cleveland Museum. The Cleveland Museum representative then authorized a 3D scan of the debris at the 2014 Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition.
Similarly, the statue in the museum was also scanned in 3D and the two pieces were digitally reset. Soon after, in the Engineering Innovation Lab at Case Western Reserve University, two copies of the statue were printed, one for the reduced version and one for the life-size version. Two sizes of statues were successfully connected to the broken part.
Sonya Quintanilla, head of the museum's Indian and Southeast Asian art exhibitions, said that the reason why the statue could not be repaired was probably because the damaged part was too heavy to be adjusted to determine its accuracy. Now with 3D printing technology , the weight of the printed model is greatly reduced, and this problem is solved. In October, the museum dismantled and reorganized the statue. Of course, these tests were performed on a 3D printed model before the official start.
3D printing and scanning play an important role in the collection and archiving of museum collections. Now the facts show that it can also be successfully applied to the restoration of cultural relics.
