Thanks to its ability to create solid objects quickly and freely, 3D printing technology has become an indispensable force in many fields and is gaining popularity among more and more professionals. Recently, a team of forensic scientists at the University of South Florida (USF) planned to solve nine unsolved murders by using this technology to reconstruct the skull of the victim.
Most of these nine cases occurred in the Gulf region of Tampa, and the common feature is that the identity of the victims is unknown. And because the technology was not developed enough (three or forty years ago), the police did not get useful clues.
Head reconstruction will take place next week at the University of Florida's Institute of Forensic Anthropology and Applied Sciences (IFAAS), which is a joint effort of the team of scientists and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and the Florida Sheriffs Association.
According to China's 3D printing network, the entire reconstruction process will be like this: First, USF anthropologist and IFAAS director Erin Kimmerle will use 3D scanning and printing technology to produce 7 adults and 2 teenagers. The skulls of the nine victims; then, the forensic painter uses these skulls to do their best to restore the facial features of the head. Finally, the completed victim avatar will be shown to the public to find possible clues. The idea of making skulls with 3D printing was proposed by painter Joe Mullins because he found that this new approach made the whole process easier and made the final avatar more realistic than traditional methods.

Mullins will lead the work of facial reconstruction, and the entire process will be documented. In addition, a new round of technical analysis such as skull analysis and chemical isotope testing will also be involved in the re-detection of the case, and all of these efforts have only one goal, which is to determine the identity of the victim and complete the case.
